DCJ Digital Design System

About DCJ Digital Design System

What is DCJ DDS?

The Department of Communities and Justice Digital Design System (DCJ DDS) is a collection of reusable digital components and templates built in alignment with the NSW Design System. It includes unique design guidelines specific to DCJ and enhanced accessibility for our users.

The purpose of the DCJ DDS is to help our staff and stakeholders including designers, developers and content authors to create accessible and consistent digital experiences.

We work closely with the NSW Design System team to align DCJ’s system with the latest specifications.

Benefits

Consistency

It's important to keep using the same component styles in our digital products. This helps to make sure everything looks familiar and works the way people expect it to, no matter which NSW Government digital channel they're using. The DCJ DDS uses a consistent visual style that enhances the NSW brand's identity, instills trust, and improves recognition.

Efficiency

By establishing consistent core style variables, components, and templates, the DCJ DDS guarantees complete alignment throughout website design and development efforts. This makes completing website projects faster and helps teams work together efficiently.

Maintenance

When digital products such as websites and applications have consistent design, it is easier to make updates and changes without disrupting the user experience. It makes it easier to keep the website up-to-date and relevant for visitors.

Accessibility first

At DCJ, we deliver inclusive communications that are accessible to all users, regardless of their ability and environment. Website accessibility is crucial for removing barriers people face when using digital products, so everyone can take part.

The DCJ DDS uses inclusive design principles for a usable experience for everyone. All components pass accessibility testing using automated and manual techniques to ensure support for:

  • screen readers
  • screen magnifiers
  • alternative keyboards
  • low vision
  • colour blindness

The DCJ DDS meets WCAG 2.2 Level A and Level AA success criteria and strives to meet Level AAA where possible. Most of our components meet Level AAA success criteria.
